Legendary Aeolus Aerodynamics
The aerodynamic performance of any structure is greatly affected by the angle of the wind.
While most wheel manufacturers design their wheels for optimal performance in a direct headwind, Keith Bontrager and Steve Hed jointly designed the Aeolus wheelsystem to provide the lowest drag results in the most common wind conditions: a slight cross headwind of 10-15%. The result is a family of wheels that are the ultimate choice for anyone who wants to maximize their technical advantage in triathlon, time trial, or road racing events where aerodynamic efficiency is crucial to success.
Airfoil Shape
The unique shape of Aeolus rims reduces aerodynamic drag when riding in the most common wind conditions: a slight cross headwind of 10-15%.
Rim Width
The width of Aeolus rims is optimized for the most commonly used tire widths, reducing drag where the tire meets the rim.
Spoke Nipples
Aeolus wheels utilize hidden spoke nipples, reducing drag where the spokes enter the rim.
OCLV Carbon Rims
Making an Aeolus carbon rim starts with our proven Race XXX Lite rim, which is handmade in Waterloo, Wisconsin using our proprietary OCLV Carbon process. OCLV (Optimum Compaction, Low Void) is the world's most advanced carbon fiber production process. Optimum Compaction squeezes air pockets between carbon fibers out, resulting in extremely low voids, the source of weakness and fatigue failures. It's a patented process so exclusive that it's utilized in only one factory in the world, ours.
Aeolus Aero Rim Structure
Race XXX Lite rims are then shipped to HED's factory, where an aerodynamic carbon skin—the legendary Aeolus profile—is mated to the OCLV rim. The end result is an Aeolus wheel with:
- Superior strength-to-weight
- Consistent and reliable braking
- Optimal spin, thanks to HED's counter-balancing process
The Aeolus 5.0 ACC brings Aeolus technology to a wider range of customers by co-molding a custom aluminum rim to a lightweight Rohacell foam-core carbon skin for stability and improved braking performance.
