The New Aeolus 9.0 Has Arrived
Introducing the new Aeolus 9.0. At 90mm tall, it's not just the deepest, most aggressive Aeolus wheel we've ever made, it's also the fastest¹. Compared to our already slippery Aeolus 6.5, the 9.0 is nearly 10 seconds faster in a 40km time trial—an eternity in a world where every fraction of a second counts. Built around the proven Aeolus formula of an aerodynamically superior rim profile mated to an extremely lightweight OCLV rim, the new Aeolus 9.0 gives you a whole new way to rule the wind.

Technical Details
OCLV Carbon Rim
Making an Aeolus rim starts with our proven Race XXX Lite rim, which is handmade in Waterloo, Wisconsin using our proprietary OCLV Carbon process. OCLV (Optimum Compaction, Low Void) is the world's most advanced carbon fiber production process. Optimum Compaction squeezes air pockets between carbon fibers out, resulting in extremely Low Voids, the source of weakness and fatigue failures. It's a patented process so exclusive that it's utilized in only one factory in the world, ours. These rims are then mated to an aerodynamic carbon skin at HED's factory to produce the lightest, strongest and longest lasting wheels on the market.
Aeolus Weight Advantage
Though aerodynamics plays a major role in time trial wheels, weight is also an important factor. The heavier a wheel the more power is required to get that wheel up to speed. Most of the Aeolus 9.0's weight savings is at the rim providing quicker acceleration. That means the rider can start quicker, recover from tight turns more efficiently and power up short climbs using less power. A lighter rim also reduces the flywheel affect allowing for more efficient braking control. The Aeolus 9.0 clincher is 240 grams lighter than the industry leading 90mm deep three spoke wheel and 28 grams lighter than the industry leading 100mm deep dish wheel.
Aeolus Aerodynamics
The aerodynamics of any structure are greatly affected by the angle of the wind. While most wheel manufacturers design their wheels to be optimal in a direct headwind, Bontrager and Steve Hed jointly designed the Aeolus wheel system to provide the lowest drag results in the most common wind conditions: a slight cross headwind of 10-15%. The result is the ultimate choice for anyone who wants to maximize their technical advantage in triathlon, time trial, and road racing events where aerodynamics are crucial to success.
Airfoil Shape
Rim surface preparations and airfoil shape reduce wind drag
Rim Width
Optimizing the rim width to closely match the width of common tires and reduce drag at their juncture
Spoke Nipples
Determining the quantity and placement of spokes to reduce drag at the center of the wheel, and hiding the spoke nipples inside the aerodynamic rim structure to reduce drag at their juncture
¹ Not including disc wheels
